My journey into community dance started when I was very small, when I first discovered how much I loved to dance and how great an outlet dancing could be. From there, having now dabbled in various different genres of dance, I decided to pursue contemporary dance to GCSE level at school and then to Level 3 standard (the equivalent of A level), in which I received a Distinction*. Whilst I ummed and ahhed about taking my passion for dance further once I'd left college, ultimately the pull towards academia won, but in late 2016 I attended a community dance symposium in London and I caught the dancing bug once again, this time realising that it could be a powerful tool, not only for me - my own wellbeing and personal development - but also for that of the wider population.
So in early 2017 I attended a CPD course entitled 'Moving into Maturity' - with specific emphasis on dance for dementia - led by the wonderful Green Candle Dance Company, and later, completed a training course for facilitators of dance for Parkinson's schemes, under the tutelage of David Leventhal (co-founder of Dance for PD®) and Danielle Teale (who is an independent practitioner and has also been fundamental in the development of the English National Ballet Dance for Parkinson's programme). Since then, I have started volunteering with Rambert's Dance for Parkinson's group in London, which has been an absolute pleasure, and assisting with the inclusive youth dance classes run by Stopgap Dance Company as well, which has been an incredibly valuable and rewarding experience. I am also working towards obtaining a foundation degree in Dance Movement Psychotherapy at Goldsmiths University, London, and continue to work on my own dance practice in my free time. In addition to being a keen dancer and choreographer, I am an avid reader and writer, lover of languages, and aspiring world traveller. I value kindness and compassion above all things, enjoy working with children (and embracing my silly side!) and wish to dedicate my life to the pursuit of social justice and empowerment for all. #RedefiningDance |
