So I'm very excited to launch a new scheme of classes for the summer term - "Dancing with Dementia"! Click here for more details and see the flyers below.
Come along and join us for a free music and movement taster session for people with Parkinson's and their guests!
Fabulous music, friendly faces, scrummy biscuits waiting for you at the end and, of course, the chance to get your groove on - what more could you want on a Friday morning?! And even better - this session is free! So give it a go, ask any questions you might have and see whether this could be something you'd like to do more often. All ages and abilities welcome. For more information about the session (and the Summer term), click here. After a brilliant first term, our Summer term is going ahead (and starting very soon!) and we'd love more of you to join us!
The timing and venue may have changed, but the set up will be exactly the same as usual - an hour or so of dancing, followed by a good old chin wag and some tea and biscuits! Who could say no to that?! Click here for more details and to sign up! After a fabulous taster session a few weeks ago, we are pleased to confirm that our Spring Term will be going ahead, starting on Wednesday 7th March!
Despite the day/time change, classes will be held at the same venue as the taster session (St Mary's Church, Camberley) and the class structure will remain more or less the same too (don't worry, there will still be biscuits at the end!) I certainly hope to see the majority of you who came to the taster event signing up at least, but the more participants the better, so let's get the word out and hopefully there will be a good number of us dancing together come the 7th March! Rest assured that I've certainly tried to take on board all the feedback you gave me at the taster session too so I hope you will enjoy the upcoming classes even more than you did the taster. Most of you told me you're after a faster, more intense workout than the one I gave you then so let's see what we can do - and maybe you should prepare to get sweaty!! You can find out more about the Spring term by clicking here, and as usual, if you have any queries or concerns whatsoever, I would be more than happy to talk things over with you. Remember, guests are welcome to come along to the classes too, so if you would feel more comfortable with your partner/sister/brother/best friend etc. there to support you, bring them along! (We won't charge guests for attending either, so that's a bonus!) And I'm still on the lookout for volunteers to help us out in class so if you know anyone who might be interested, please point them in my direction! We're currently looking for volunteers to help out with our upcoming Dance for Parkinson's classes and need your help! So if you have a spare couple of hours on Wednesday afternoon (and the occasional Friday), live locally to Camberley (Surrey) and would like to help make a difference in the community, then we would really love you to get on board. All we ask of volunteers is that they join us once a week for the Dance for Parkinson's class and give us a hand setting up the venue, supporting me during the session (by engaging with the participants, helping with the CD player, moving chairs etc.) and serving teas and coffees at the end. There are no prerequisites for volunteering - so please don't think you have to be an experienced dancer or have expert knowledge of Parkinson's - but we are looking for people who are patient, enthusiastic, able to use their initiative and willing to join in with the dancing. If movement doesn't come naturally to you, that's fine, so long as you give it your best try and have a big smile on you face while doing it! It would also be useful if you were physically fit (i.e. able to support participants who may have difficulty with mobility without putting your own health and wellbeing at risk), but I would never want to exclude anyone from volunteering on the grounds of health conditions or disability, so do get in touch anyway. Although we won't be able to pay you for your time, in return for your kindness, you will be reimbursed with tea/coffee and biscuits and will, we hope, have lots of fun working with us. It's an opportunity to meet new people, discover the joys of movement and make a difference in local people's lives, so I can assure you you won't regret deciding to volunteer. To get a better flavour of what volunteering might involve (find out more here) get in touch with me via the CONTACT page. Alternatively, if you've already made up your mind and would like to volunteer, you can download the application form here:
Join us on Friday 9th February 10.30am-12.30pm, when we'll be hosting a free taster session in Camberley for anyone interested in our Dance for Parkinson's course! Whether it's you who has Parkinson's, or else a family member or friend, why not come along and see what Dance for Parkinson's is all about?! Equally, if you think you might be interested in volunteering with us in class, come along and get a feel for how we work. To start the session, there'll be a brief introduction to the course, followed by an hour's dance class for you to join in with, so you can see how a regular class would run - but don't be scared, I'll start you off gently! Then, there'll be a chance for you to hear about some of the research that's been done on Dance for Parkinson's around the world and to watch some video clips of other groups in action, and after all that, we'll make sure that there's plenty of time left for mingling, asking questions and enjoying lots of tea and biscuits! I'll be there (of course!), and so will Alistair Jack from Parkinson's UK, who's very kindly helping me organise the project, so it'll be a great opportunity not only to test out a new dance class but also to learn about some of the other services on offer to people with Parkinson's in the local area. You might even make some new friends! So please, spread the word and come along! It'll be a lot of fun and we'd love to have you there! If you have any queries or concerns, don't hesitate to get in touch via our CONTACT page. The class will be held at
